The B2B sales and proposal glossary

Every deal runs on its own vocabulary. This glossary defines the terms behind RFPs, proposals, and modern sales workflows, in plain language, for the teams who live them.

Back to the list

Account executive (AE)

An account executive (AE) is the salesperson who owns a deal from qualified opportunity through close, running discovery, demos, proposals, and negotiation. They carry a quota and are responsible for turning pipeline into closed revenue.

Why it matters in B2B sales

The AE is the closing engine of most B2B teams, so their productivity directly drives revenue. The problem is how much AE time goes to non-selling work, and building proposals is one of the biggest culprits.

Every hour an AE spends formatting a document is an hour not spent with buyers, which is why proposal efficiency is a direct lever on quota attainment. Freeing AE time from administrative work is one of the highest-return operational changes a sales org can make, because it puts the most expensive people back in front of customers.

What an account executive does

The AE owns the middle and end of the sales cycle: taking qualified opportunities from an SDR, running discovery, coordinating demos and technical validation with a sales engineer, building and presenting the proposal, negotiating terms, and closing. They quarterback the buying group and are measured on closed revenue against quota.

AE vs SDR vs account manager

These roles split the customer lifecycle. An SDR works the top of the funnel, prospecting and qualifying, then hands off to the AE, who closes. An account manager takes over after the sale to retain and grow the account. The AE sits in the middle, owning the stretch where a qualified lead becomes a customer.

A concrete example

An AE juggling a dozen active deals loses an afternoon each week assembling proposals from old files. Automating that step hands the time back to discovery and negotiation, where the AE actually moves deals forward, and often lifts the number of deals they can run at once.

How it shows up in a modern proposal workflow

Freeing AE time is exactly what proposal automation is for. Cobl generates the sales proposal so the AE reviews rather than builds, letting them run more deals and lean on the SDR handoffs feeding their pipeline.

That shift, from document assembler to deal closer, is where an AE's real value lies, and it is the clearest way a proposal tool pays for itself: more selling time from the people whose selling time is worth the most.
